The Journey Continues...

Girl Scout Troop 11032 worked on making their idea on a Lending Library come to fruition at their last meeting.

Last week I met with Christine Drexler who started Cocoa Packs to talk with her about the girls Lending Library being a part of her wonderful organization that provides meals to families in our township.  She was so excited and honored to see that our Girl Scout troop thought of Cocoa Packs as a good place for the Lending Library.  She commented that the girls had such compassion and empathy to do something like this. Christine had an old, brown, metal bookcase already in place that housed books for children to take when they came to pick up their food.  I told her how we were really looking forward to giving them a mobile bookcase that would hold books from babies to adults, include a space for bookmarks, and a box to collect box tops.  We also purchased plastic bins for book/food donations.  Christine was gracious enough to show me around her operation.  I was very impressed by the magnitude of food, staff, and compassion I saw.

We bought wooden crates and a couple of the girls stained them, and then they were brought to the meeting for the girls to paint.  A messy job but one the girls were up to complete. We choose to paint them red, white and blue the colors Cocoa Packs uses.  They also hand painted their names made out of wooden letters.  They did a fantastic job with their names that will be added to the side of the bookcase. The girls finished up their motto "Books, books they're good for your heart, the more you read  the more you get smart".  I was also handed a final copy of their logo.  A red fox, and a cat with a  book, along with their troop number, their girl scout symbol, and their motto.  I was really proud of the girls creativity and their ability to work well individually and as a team.

Many of the girls have made homemade book marks, and flyers to advertise our Lending Library.  Many of these things were done at home on their own.  They have been responsible for many homework assignments during this journey and they really have shown they are capable of great things!
